We arrived in Madrid at 11 AM on Wednesday, and met with Enrique at 1 PM for a 4 hour tour. Wow, did we get our money's worth that day! Enrique knows his home city (Madrid), it's history, it's politics, and the art & buildings. He took us through the old city, stopping at historical sites to give some background, and then moved on - - which is what we hoped for - - a quick review of the sites which we would then visit later on our trip.
The next day we met Monica of Madsnail for our tour of the Royal Palace, The Cathedral, The Prado Museum, and then finishing at Retiro Park. Monica's home city is also Madrid. With her background in architecture and history - - Monica's descriptions and observations of these sites is fabulous. We spend about 2 hours in the Royal Palace, and an hour in The Cathedral. Make sure you go down into the crypt below The Cathedral (Monica's suggestion) as it is amazingly beautiful, and (as far as crypt's go) ... modern. Going to Prado next sort of links the art, and the Habsburgs / Bourbons dynasties. Monica had an excellent way of tying the Royalty, the Artworks, and the buildings ... to tell the story of Espana. Monica is an excellent guide !!
